Official Obituary

Dan Blankenbaker

Dan Blankenbaker, 69, of Robinson, IL, died unexpectedly on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at his home. He was born April 3, 1952, in Terre Haute, IN, the son of John & Rosalie (Mumford) Blankenbaker, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Heather Nicole Bradshaw, in 2005 and by his niece, Lori Dvorak.

He married Vicky (Laymon) on March 27, 1978, and she survives. He is also survived by his son & daughter-in-law, Jason & Katie Blankenbaker; by his precious granddaughters, Lily Blankenbaker and Leah Blankenbaker; by his brother & sister-in-law, Bill & Janice Blankenbaker; by his sisters, Norma Geffs and Linda Stoneking; as well as several nieces & nephews and great-nieces & nephews.

Dan grew up in the Casey area and was a 1970 graduate of Casey High School. He would further his education at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Lake Land College, where he earned an associate degree in mathematics. In 1977, Dan went to work for the Marathon Pipeline and worked his way up to corrosion tech before retiring in 2011.

Anyone who knew Dan recognized that he was multifaceted, seeing as he held a wide array of interests that each brought life to his living. He was an avid motorcyclist and truly enjoyed the freedom of the open road. Dan was also quite the sports fan and had a special place in his heart for the Chicago Bears. He had a very technical mind, which lent itself to his remote-controlled boat and airplane hobby. He amassed quite a collection of these, as well as of guitars. Dan's musical abilities and love of Jesus culminated at Highland Church of Christ, where he was a staple on the worship team for 32 years. He also volunteered to help with church youth group functions when Jason was a boy, and in this capacity, taught a number of kids how to ski! He loved spending time out on the water and found great peace in fishing and joy in boating with his family.

It was evident that his loved ones took on a central role in his life. Dan was a devoted husband, a proud dad, and a doting grandpa and will be remembered for pouring so much of himself into each of these roles. Though we grieve his passing, we do not grieve as those without hope. Instead, we find assurance that Dan is with Jesus and will dwell with him in the house of the Lord forever.

A celebration of Dan's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 4th, at the Highland Church of Christ in Robinson, with Pastors Shane Bopp and Tom Buchanan officiating. Memorials may be made to either "Highland Church of Christ" or to the "Oblong Children's Christian Home", with envelopes available at the church. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson is in charge of arrangements.

Dan was a good rider and an even better friend. Dan was regular on the rough road rides for years. I always enjoyed his company. I'll miss him. Here is a photo of Dan back in 2010. He is closest to the camera on the left.

Dan on the right. We were always laughing when we were together.

I am so sorry to hear this and send condolences and prayers to his family and loved ones. Dan was a really nice guy and we always enjoyed visiting. Q and I had a couple of close encounters with bears on bike rides. So Dan carved me a little bear as a keepsake. He did excellent carvings in case you didn't know.

So many good memories with Dan and MTF and MLR over the years. Dan was a first responder to so many posts on the forum and FB. At Helen Ga, I remember I got a good lesson on digital cameras... So much so I purchased the same camera. My favorite quote sure does apply to Dan:

"What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, For all that we love deeply becomes a part of us."
Helen Keller

When I first started riding my motorcycle with the MTF I was anxious and uncertain. Dan was so kind and very encouraging. He was great to ride with and helped Andy keep an eye on me. Even though I haven’t seen him in a very long time we continued our friendship through Facebook. This has really been a shock and breaks my heart.
    -    Susan Simons
