Also the MTF Flower Sniffin' Committee strongly encourages each participant in our events to self assess their riding style, interests, need for breaks and riding skill level and to keep that assessment in mind when choosing a riding partner or small group (2-4 riders) to ride with at our events. Sharing the road with someone of similar interests and riding style not only makes the ride more enjoyable for you, but safer for everyone.

Route Description |
Fort Wilkins Historic State Park / Cooper Harbor Lighthouse Complex | Direct: Ft Wilkins.gdb Ft Wilkins.gpx Alternate: Ft Wilkins - ALT.gdb Ft Wilkins - ALT.gpx |
Fort
Wilkins Historic State Park is operated by the state of
Michigan at Copper Harbor. Copper Harbor is located at the
northern tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, bordering Lake
Superior. It is one of the best natural harbors in Keweenaw
County and was a quick focus of attention after copper was
discovered on the peninsula in the 1830s. Two routes are available, Direct (304 miles 6.75 hours, not counting FS opportunities) and Alternate (355 miles 7.75 hours, not counting FS opportunities). They are virtually identical except that the Alternate route adds on a 1-hour extension at the end which goes through the Ottawa National Forest. Both routes go to the Gay Bar & Grill and the Suomi Home Bakery & Restaurant, which have been recommended by fellow MTFers, after visiting Fort Wilkins and the Cooper Harbor Lighthouse. You can go to either or both! |
Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum | Direct: Shipwreck.gdb Shipwreck.gpx Alternate: Shipwreck - ALT.gdb Shipwreck - ALT.gpx |
The Great
Lakes Shipwreck Museum is located at the Whitefish Point
Light Station in Chippewa County Michigan. The light station
property is governed by the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical
Society (GLSHS), the Michigan Audubon Society (MAS), and the
United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and operated
by the GLSHS. The museum exhibits artifacts from shipwrecks
from the Whitefish Point Underwater Preserve and the bell from
the wreck of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. Admission to the museum
includes a tour of historic buildings with displays that
interpret the Great Lakes maritime, United States Coast Guard,
and US Life-Saving Service history. Two routes are available, Direct (310 miles 6.0 hours, not counting FS opportunities) and Alternate (355 miles 7.0 hours, not counting FS opportunities). They are virtually identical except that the Alternate route adds on a 1-hour extension at the end which goes through the Hiawatha National Forest. Lunch options include the Berry Patch Gifts & Bakery and the Little Falls Inn Red Flannel Saloon, both in Whitefish Township. Both routes will take you past these locations but I have not included them on the route. The waypoints are included however. |
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore | Cruise: Pictured Rocks Cruise.gdb Pictured Rocks Cruise.gpx Trail: National Lakeshore Trail.gdb National Lakeshore Trail.gpx |
Sandstone cliffs, beaches, sand dunes, waterfalls, lakes,
forest, and shoreline beckon you to visit Pictured
Rocks National Lakeshore. Hiking, camping, sightseeing,
and four season outdoor opportunities abound. The lakeshore
hugs the Lake Superior shoreline for more than 40 miles. Two
routes are available, Cruise and Trail: The Cruise route goes to Munising MI to Pictured Rocks Cruises. Assuming you've got a reservation, you then board a boat for one of three cruises, lasting 2.5 to 3 hours. See their website for more info and to make reservations. Travel time from the hotel to Munising is 51 minutes, approximately 45 miles. The Trail route goes from the hotel to the West Entrance of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. You then travel approximately 45 miles on the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Trail (Alger County Road H-58) to the East Entrance. And return to the hotel on a slightly southerly route, passing the Seney National Wildlife Refuge. Roundtrip travel time, not counting FS opportunities, is 4.25 hours, 205 miles. |
Porcupine Mountain & Waterfalls | Porcupine
Mtn.gdb Porcupine Mtn.gpx |
Enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Superior, numerous waterfalls and some of the most pristine forests in the United States as you tour the Porcupine Mountains. Only 1 route is mapped out but it should be very scenic. Leaving the hotel you head for the Porcupine Mountains, stopping at the Presque Isle River, Nonesuch and Little Union Gorge Falls before stopping for lunch at Syl's Café and then heading back to the hotel. Roundtrip travel time, not counting FS opportunities, is 5.75 hours, 292 miles. |
Tahquamenon Falls Riverboat Tours & the Famous Toonerville Trolley | Tahquamenon
Falls Riverboat.gdb Tahquamenon Falls Riverboat.gpx |
The Tahquamenon
Falls Wilderness Excursion is located in the beautiful
Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The Toonerville Trolley, an
authentic narrow gauge railroad, takes you 5 1/2 miles through
thick forest; the habitat of bear, deer, moose, gray wolf, and
many types of birds. At the end of the train line is your
first view of the beautiful Tahquamenon River, where the
riverboat is boarded for a 21 mile cruise down the river to
the rapids 1/2 mile above the Upper Tahquamenon Falls. There
are 2 catches to this ride: Catch # 1: The entire excursion takes 6.5 hours, so if you choose this option be aware that your day will last close to 11 hours when you count in the motorcycle ride of 2+ hours each way. There is a shorter excursion, which eliminates the riverboat, which only lasts 1.75 hours. Catch # 2: During July, the excursion only runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays. |
