Safety

In addition to requiring the use of a DOT approved helmet on all MTF rides, the MTF Flower Sniff'n Committee strongly encourages the use of Motorcycle specific protective clothing and footwear while participating in any Flower Sniff'n event. All-the-gear-All-the-time (ATGATT) reduces the severity of injuries in an accident and we want every participant in our events to be as safe as possible.

Also the MTF Flower Sniff'n Committee strongly encourages each participant in our events to self assess their riding style, interests, need for breaks and riding skill level and to keep that assessment in mind when choosing a riding partner or small group (2-4 riders) to ride with at our events. Sharing the road with someone of similar interests and riding style not only makes the ride more enjoyable for you, but safer for everyone.

Suggested Flower Sniff'n Routes

Route

Route Description

Four routes are courtesy of Road Runner magazine, the March/April 2021 edition.
The 555 Loop

Distance: 160 miles
Duration: 4h 03m, not including stops
Southeast Ohio may not sound like an exotic riding location, but the region has some very challenging roads in the Appalachian Mountain foothills. SR 555, which winds its way 65 miles south from Zanesville, OH, to the banks of the Ohio River, is one of the most difficult routes that any rider is likely to encounter in Ohio or in many other locations.
555, 26, sr80

Distance: 187 miles
Duration: 4h 37m, not including stops
The southeast cloverleaf tour leaves Zanesville and heads towards the Ohio River. It will require your full attention with the never-ending succession of curves. The elevation at the river is 650 feet, but 17.5 miles later in Woodsfield, it's almost twice as high. SR 800 to Woodsfield is part of the Demon’s Triangle, as dubbed by Monroe County. The biggest increase in altitude happens close to the river, but it’s an endlessly curvy road passing by lots of farms and surprising long-range views.
Amish Country

Distance: 207 miles
Duration: 5h 06m, not including stops
The northwest cloverleaf tour leaves Zanesville and heads to SR 658 between SR 209 and Baltic, OH, is a long, flowy section without many driveways or side streets with good asphalt and fun but predictable curves. Baltic is definitely Amish Country! Leaving Baltic there are empty two-lane roads with even more Amish country, a waterfall, a tunnel, and a dam.
State Parks-Hocking Hills

Distance: 164 miles
Duration: 4h 06m, not including stops
The southwest cloverleaf tour starts out rather straight and uneventful, then you arrive at Burr Oak State Park with a nice scenic road right next to the water. Continue on to Hocking Hills State Park. The Lake Hope Lodge and the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls are popular stops for meal breaks. Leaving the park you leave the hills, trees, and twisties behind and are now surrounded by cornfields. Followed by some excitingly tight corners back to Zanesville.
Tuscarawas Cty-Seneca Lake

Distance: 190 miles
Duration: 5h 01m, not including stops
The northeast cloverleaf tour leaves Zanesville and heads through Amish Country again on the way to Tuscarawas County. The landscape became a little more open, riding on curvy roads on top of hills with uninterrupted views to all sides. On the return trip you'll pass Seneca Lake, a beautiful getaway just south of Zanesville.

Additional POIs (Points of Interest)
  • AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum
  • Valley Gem Sternwheeler: you can book narrated sightseeing tourson this genuine sternwheel passenger vessel that runs the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers. The 555 Loop and 555,26,SR800 routes will both take you to this location.
  • John & Annie Glenn Museum: visit John Glenn's boyhood home, you will be engaged in life as his family lived it. Costumed historians will take you back to either 1937 - "The Life of an American Family during the Great Depression", 1944 - Life on the Home Front during WWII, or 1962 - "John Glenn's role in America's Space Race".
  • National Road & Zane Grey Museum: exhibits on The National Road and Western author Zane Grey.
  • Muskingum River Y Bridge: “Go to the middle of the bridge and turn left.”  According to a local legend, these are the directions a Zanesville man gave a confused traveler more than 100 years ago.  Since then, the phrase has remained a popular joke with Zanesville residents. After riding over Zanesville’s historic Y-Bridge, go to Putnam Hill Park for a panoramic perspective of it at the overlook.
